VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OPTIMIZATION SYSTEM TO THE ROAD CHARACTERISTICS

Project founded by

The sustainable increase of the passengers and goods mobility by road during the next years requires taking into account strong proceedings, aimed at achieving reductions in the accidents number and in the concentration of the pollutant emissions. The inadequate speed related to the variable road conditions is one of the main factors of the traffic accidents occurrence. Because of that, the application of countermeasures that assist to the driver for the selection of the more convenient speed is an effective way for improving the road safety, helping at the same time to the optimization of the energy management during the driving.

It is possible to calculate the safe driving speed, considering the infrastructure parameters and the dynamic behaviour of the type of vehicle selected. Besides, it is possible to determine on real time the optimum driving speed and the adequate gearbox rate for achieving the minimum fuel consumption. Additionally, criteria for the optimization of the travelling time can be applied.

The integrated system is a contribution for the improving of the scientific and technological knowledge, taking into account that there is not any development for the calculation of the optimum speed, including: accurate data of the geometric parameters of the road and more influential elements of the infrastructure, measured in the passing section and in the following sections. It consists in creating “electronic eyes” for the vehicle, which can notice the road elements as far as needed, and they can identify the road parameters in an accurate way: radius, slope, and so on.

The main results from this research project will consist in a real time algorithm for the calculation of the optimum speed, and in a demonstration vehicle with the on board algorithm for advising to the driver about this speed.
